  • Q
Describe your career path to date?
    A
"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value." Albert Einstein

For ten years I sweated it out working as a press photographer for News Corp in hot and sunny Queensland. After pursuing personal photographic projects in Bhutan I found the gumption to be a founder, providing an innovative service of real value. Last year I launched The Photo Pitch, a national network of press photographers creating images made specifically for PR.
  • Q
What makes The Photo Pitch different to a freelance photographer?
    A
The Photo Pitch is more than just one freelance photographer; we are a network of press photographers across Australia and New Zealand taking photos for media and are made for PR. Our goal is to have 50 press photographers filling 50 photo briefs every day within 5 years. We are the first call for PR agencies and brands to provide all of the press-ready photography services they need, throughout Australia and New Zealand.
  • Q
What do you love about your job?
    A
I love that every day is different, filled with fresh faces and new stories to tell. I love that I get to dream big and instigate change in the freelance photography market. The satisfaction of a job well done connecting local press photographers with PR agencies is undeniable and I always get a buzz finding new challenges and boundaries to push.
  • Q
    And what's not so great?
    A
As a founder of a new start up I find myself with less time behind the camera.
  • Q
What makes a photo front page worthy?
    A
Get the right talent, the right location and choose the right photographer. Limit the talent to three people for the photo shoot and choose vibrant and energetic people that are comfortable in front of the camera. Find a photogenic location that helps the photo tell your story. Finally, use a photographer that understands media and how to create a captivating press image.
  • Q
Why is it beneficial to hire a photographer with newsroom experience?
    A
Press photographers know the publication they shoot for. Each editor has different preferences when looking for that page one photo. Can you pick which Sydney editor of a major daily newspaper hates trees in photos? He just doesn't like trees. He loves cows. Photos with cows easily claim the prized page three photo. Know the publication you're targeting and photograph specifically for that editor, quirks and all.
  • Q
    Describe your typical day?
    A
A typical day sees me liaising between press photographers and PR agencies on photo shoots across Australia and New Zealand. Each day I make time to find new leads and to discover up and coming talented photographers to bring on board our ever-growing team at The Photo Pitch.
  • Q
What is the best experience you've had in your career?
    A
I'm an explorer at heart and love to take the path less travelled. Since 2014 I've been telling the story of kidney failure patients in Bhutan, a tiny nation in the Himalayas. My photos share their stories and support my fundraising efforts to provide an increased quality of life for underprivileged Bhutanese patients relying on dialysis for survival.
  • Q
How do you like to be contacted and when?
    A
Any time, anywhere, any way. Media is a 24-hour beast and The Photo Pitch believes that accessibility and efficiency is key to providing a service that caters to the 24-hour media cycle.
  • Q
What motivates you to continue taking pictures economically, politically, intellectually or emotionally?
    A
Photography is an incredibly powerful tool that can evoke emotion, instigate change and create real difference in the way we view the world around us. The idea that as a photographer I can contribute to creating change through story telling is a driving factor in my motivation.
  • Q
The media landscape is going through a period of dramatic change, with the importance of image content becoming more and more prevalent - where do you see it in 5 years?
    A
Social media is a game changer with how millennials consume news and is heavily reliant on the visual to capture the readers' attention. The Photo Pitch is a friend of the journalist and PR agent alike as we provide photographs that editors love. By supplying images ready to publish we enable journalists in under-resourced newsrooms to produce stories more efficiently and for the PR agency to have greater control of the image published.
  • Q
If you weren't a Photographer, what would you be?
    A
I'm a storyteller. Photography is my medium of choice but I will always love sharing a great story with the world.
