A weekly Q&A with interesting people in the Australian Media Industry
Kent 'Smallzy' Small
  • Name Kent 'Smallzy' Small
  • Company Nova Entertainment
  • Position Host of Nova's Smallzy's Surgery National Night Show (Weeknights 7pm-10pm)
  • Interviewed by Social Diary on 16/7/2015
  • Q
How long have you been in your current role?
    A
I became host of Smallzy's Surgery in January 2012.
  • Q
How did you get into Radio?
    A
During High School I was involved in community radio, then I attended the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) and got my first real radio gig as the Night's announcer at Star 104.5 FM on the Central Coast!
  • Q
    Describe a typical day:
    A
A typical day would involve the gym (except in winter - I stay inside and eat carbs in winter) and turning on my microphone to start the show at 7pm every night. What happens in between changes every day. For example, last year I did about 270 interviews, some live and others pre-recorded at different times depending on the guest so two days are rarely the same!
  • Q
What has been the most exciting experience on the job?
    A
Travelling. I'm lucky enough to have a show focusing on pop culture which allows me to take the show on the road and give listeners access to events like the Grammy Awards, MTV EMAs and even last year's Hunger Games World Premier in London with Jennifer Lawrence!
  • Q
What's the downside of your job?
    A
The hours! Shift work can be a bummer and kill your social life but at least I get to entertain others while they are relaxing, or spending time with friends and family.
  • Q
Have you dealt with many PRs directly during your career, and if so what has your experience been like?
    A
I'm a big fan of working with PRs who are aware of my brand and the show's brand when pitching their stories and opportunities. I always find it funny when I get an email pitching incontinence products - probs not relevant for me or the show. Lol.
  • Q
What are you looking for on your show - what sort of pitch would get an immediate response?
    A
Something tangible that goes beyond an email and starts a conversation between me and my team. For example if something arrives at my desk it gets an immediate response from us talking about it! On a busy day an email can easily be missed.
  • Q
Do you attend many media events?
    A
Not as many as I'd wish! As my show is on from 7pm to 10pm I'm usually not able to attend events on weeknights. However anything during the day or weekend that is of interest - count me in.
  • Q
Do invitations come directly to you, through the network or through your agent - and which do you prefer?
    A
Generally invitations come direct to me which is how I like it, keeps me aware of what's going on outside of the radio show.
  • Q
Where do you see your industry in 5 years?
    A
Thriving and continuing to expand as a multimedia business. I see Radio and social media working hand in hand more than ever to make people feel part of something in a way that other traditional media doesn't.
  • Q
If you weren't on radio, what would you be?
    A
Unemployed and singing for my supper. Just joking but whatever I'd be doing it would involve music.
