  • Q
Describe your career path to date?
    A
My first media gig was a junior beauty/editorial role at Girlfriend magazine. From there I went on to work at publications including Cosmo Hair & Beauty, Cosmo Bride, Cosmo Pregnancy, and Professional Beauty, before returning to Girlfriend magazine as the beauty editor. I went on to land the role of beauty editor at PRIMPED.com.au, and it was there that I fell in love with digital media and blogging. After a couple of years at the helm of PRIMPED I decided it was time to go freelance and launch my own site.
  • Q
What do you love about your job?
    A
It's exciting that it's my own creation, and that I get to be in charge of the site direction and content strategy. I also love the work/life balance that working for yourself brings, and I also really enjoy having so many different creative outlets in my job - from copywriting to site design to styling and photography.
  • Q
    And what's not so great?
    A
Wearing so many different hats! My main focus is on producing content for the site, but as a small business owner I also manage other aspects of the business including social media strategy, marketing, advertising and client management, along with the admin and accounting side of things as well - it's a lot to juggle and I look forward to the day when I can outsource more of these elements!
  • Q
    Describe your typical day?
    A
I usually do a barre class or yoga first thing in the morning, and then make sure I'm at my desk and ready to rumble by 9am. I prefer to write blog posts and articles in the morning, so I concentrate on that until lunchtime, and then catch up on emails and admin in the afternoon. On a typical day I might also be attending one or two beauty product launches, and might also catch up with a PR over coffee to chat about their latest products and brands news.
  • Q
What is the best experience you've had in your career?
    A
Oh gosh, that's a tricky one to answer! I can't think of a specific moment that takes the cake, but looking back I'd say the best thing would be having the chance to work with so many amazingly talented creatives over the years and learning from them.
  • Q
What do great PR people do?
    A
Read and understand each publication before putting forward tailor-made pitches.
  • Q
    What do bad PRs do...
    A
Send out mass product/story pitches that aren't targeted to my site or target demographic.
  • Q
How do you like to be contacted and when?
    A
Email is the best way to reach me.
  • Q
How has social media altered your job since the days when you started out?
    A
Social media has completely transformed the industry - when I first started working in magazines, the concept of 'digital influencers' didn't really exist, and social media and websites were something of an afterthought designed only to complement the print publication. Now social media dominates as a platform for companies and brands to connect with their target demographic.
  • Q
Do you enjoy attending industry events?
    A
Sure do! Unfortunately I don't have the time to attend every single event I'm invited to, but when I do attend industry events I love learning about new product developments, and I enjoy meeting other bloggers and industry leaders and learning from their experiences and knowledge.
  • Q
The media landscape is going through a period of dramatic change - where do you see it in 5 years?
    A
I think we're going to continue to see a decline in print media circulation figures, while more and more iconic print publications will move to online platforms. I also think brand advertising budgets will be increasingly channelled into digital and away from traditional media.
  • Q
If you weren't a blogger, what would you be?
    A
A psychologist. Or a visual merchandiser. Oh gosh, I have no idea!
