Angus O'Loughlin & Ash London
  • Name Angus O'Loughlin & Ash London
  • Company Southern Cross Austereo
  • Position Shazam Top 20 Co-hosts
  • Interviewed by Social Diary on 23/4/2015
  • Q
How long have you been in your current role?
    A
ANGUS: 2.5 years but since the launch of Shazam Top 20, it really feels like a new job every day! I feel like I'm a pretty lucky guy.

ASH: I've been hosting Shazam Top 20 for 6 months, and Take40 for about a year longer than that!
  • Q
How did you get into Radio?
    A
ANGUS: My dad has been in radio for 40 years and after finishing school in Geelong I flew up to Cairns to work at the station he was doing the brekkie show on. I worked weekends setting up the "Outside Broadcast" equipment before I couldn't resist the pull of being on-air any longer and started my journey to the mic! I moved into the role of Promotions coordinator, and then started getting more on-air experience, travelling to Tasmania, Sunshine Coast, Adelaide and finally reaching the pot of gold in Sydney, talking into microphones broadcasting across Australia.

ASH: I still have no idea to be honest! I was working on a music telly show called The Loop, and from there got the call up to get involved with Take40. Angus and I connected straight away, and before long we were on air together every night.
  • Q
    Describe a typical day:
    A
ANGUS: I wake up around 9am, take my dog, Buckets, for a walk and head to the gym. I will cook some food for the day and head into work about 2pm. The Shazam Top 20 team meet twice a day, we might listen to the show from the night before to iron out some kinks and then plan future shows for the week. We also have a celebrity interview everyday ranging from Diplo to Kim Kardashian to Ed Sheeran, which we will roll out on the show that night. During the week I'll also do a TV spot for "The Loop", and pick my nose.

ASH: The great thing about night radio is that we don't start until 2pm, so the morning usually consists of gym, beach, slothing about, an overpriced Sydney brekky somewhere and then into work! We do a lot of artist interviews, so these can take up a lot of our prep time. Before we get on air every night I've gotta get my head around every popstars movements - if they went to the toilet that day, chances are that before we go on air at 7pm, I know about it.
  • Q
What has been the most exciting experience on the job?
    A
ANGUS: Playing epic tunes for the first time on radio! Recently Kendrick Lamar "King Kunta". Also meeting artists or celebrities you've been into for a long time. For me meeting Pharrell Williams was a big moment in my life and career.

ASH: It's gotta be the people you get to meet - from Slash to One Direction to Zane Lowe to Robin Williams, I've had the chance to meet so many incredible human beings that I admire. I love having 5 minutes to win someone over.
  • Q
What's the downside of your job?
    A
ANGUS: No social life! Working on nightly radio I haven't been able to go out for dinner with friends in over 2 years during the week!

ASH: Being on air until 10pm is kind of a social life buzzkill, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives of being at work every night of the week.
  • Q
Have you dealt with many PRs directly during your career, and if so what has your experience been like?
    A
ANGUS: I am pretty active on social media, so I do get the odd communication from PRs wanting me to post about stuff in exchange for a tag online. I think the key for PRs to note is you want to make sure that when you are sending people like me product, it is in line with who they are and what they represent. For example, please don't send me 'slim shakes' unless you're wanting to offend me.

ASH: I've certainly never had any nightmare experiences - most of you kids are pretty lovely!
  • Q
What are you looking for on your show - what sort of pitch would get an immediate response?
    A
ANGUS: Anything on brand that lives and breathes within pop culture.

ASH: As long as it's on-brand, we're open! We wanna stay authentic and relatable - so if we have to try and sell something ridic, our audience will see straight through it. We want to have FUN - so if it's something that we can bring to life on air in a cheeky way then we'll jump at it!
  • Q
Do you attend many media events?
    A
ANGUS: I wish, but not with a show that's on 7-10pm every weeknight! We would love the opportunity to attend more.

ASH: It's certainly a little harder these days working nights - but weekends are always free, which is a great chance to let my hair down and catch up with industry mates. It's also funny to watch my boyfriend mysteriously disappear the second he spots a red carpet - I think he'd rather be surfing.
  • Q
Do invitations come directly to you, through the network or through your agent - and which do you prefer?
    A
ANGUS: They must go to my manager because I rarely see them.

ASH: Invitations come through regularly via all those avenues - I'm not super picky to be honest! But as work life gets busier sometimes it's nice to have management keep my disorganised ass in gear!
  • Q
Where do you see your industry in 5 years?
    A
ANGUS: It'll be streamed online and content will flow heavily from and to a social presence.

ASH: That's a huge question! The rise and rise of the digital age means that audiences have more and more control over what they consume and when they consume it. I think in 5 years talent will have to be a lot more savvy and driven when it comes to releasing their own content - and we will need to have the ability to write, produce, record, edit and distribute our own stuff.
  • Q
If you weren't on radio, what would you be?
    A
ANGUS: A traveller creating online content and super happy with just being able to afford a roof over my head with a corona in my hand in Tulum.

ASH: I would be a florist. When all of this is over, that's where you'll find me. Surrounded by flowers, chatting to customers and generally being a batty old lady with a dog called Matey.
